This Sunday we begin a new summer sermon series, The Prophet’s Voice: Speaking Truth to a Broken City. We will dive in to the minor prophets, also known as those small books with difficult-to-pronounce names at the end of the Old Testament. God called each of these prophets to deliver a powerful message to a specific group of people when they had strayed from their covenant relationship with him.
The message of the prophets was almost always unpopular because it was contrary to the contemporary wisdom and the values of the people. No one wants to be told that they are wrong but God, in his mercy, sends prophets to point out how the people have displeased God and guide them back to him.
Prophets are powerfully used by the Lord throughout scripture and yet we seldom talk about them as a part of God’s plan today. Do we even know what a prophet does? And who would God call to be his prophet now? We expect to see someone with a beard and robes delivering the Lord’s message but we never consider that he might chose someone like you or me for the same task.
Join us as we hear the voices of Jonah, Amos, Hosea, Micah, Joel, Haggai, and Malachi, week by week. Together we will explore God’s message for the people of Israel and Judah and discern the prophetic mission that he has for all of his followers.
