On Mission: Feeding Richardson with Network

Becky Farnsworth has been a part of Restoration since our very first Sunday! She has served our community in several different roles over the years and can be currently seen on Sunday serving communion and reading this week’s Scriptures with a subtle flare. In addition, Becky is a dedicated volunteer at Network of Community Ministries. Network provides food, clothing, and other practical assistance to neighbors in need in the Richardson area. We asked Becky to share what it is like to volunteer at Network.

Q. Describe your volunteer role at Network.
A. I have volunteered in the Network Community Ministries Food Room for the last 8 years. Network recently rearranged the food room to make it larger and more like a grocery store. I accompany clients through the food room so they can select the food that best fits the needs of their family. I take in donations, stock the shelves, enter client distributions in the computer and take out the trash.

Q. How did you get involved with Network originally?
A. I felt called to volunteer to meet basic needs and feed people. My friend needed to volunteer with her young daughter to get service hours and I decided to tag along. Once I started to work there I knew that was exactly where I belonged.

Q. What has motivated to you to continue to serve week after week?
A. The “thank yous” we get from clients and seeing the need. Many people in our community are one paycheck away from hunger.

Q. Are there current or upcoming projects that Restoration can support?
A. We have started the school supply drive so that we are prepared for back to school season. They like to assign items so that they get everything they need, but I can take in items anyone wants to donate.

We always need donations of food, toiletries, school supplies, and Christmas gifts.

Q. Are there ways that people at Restoration can become personally involved with Network?
A. There are a few ways you can help:

  • I will take clothes, food, school supplies or toys that anyone wishes to donate in with me any time. Current needs can be found on the Network Wish List.
  • Cash donations can be easily made online that will help with utilities and rent.
  • There are many volunteer opportunities at Network:  stocking the warehouse, sorting school supplies, and sorting clothes for our Clothes Closet. Contact volunteer coordinator Wendy Rivera to learn more.
  • You can even play in the upcoming golf tournament. The Network 21st Annual Golf Tournament is September 14th at the Sherrill Park Golf course.

Thanks to Becky for sharing her experience with us. Support Network by bringing donations of shelf stable food and toiletries to worship this Sunday, July 1. Also, we will have future dates when Restoration can serve together at Network.
